A Century of Speed Speed Week 2014

Story and Photos by Monique Sache

This past August marked the 100th anniversary for speed week out on the Bonneville Salt Flats.  People from around the world packed their bags, loaded up their trailers and made the annual pilgrimage to Bonneville.   For some a tradition, for others a long time dream to attend for the first time, either way, all excited with the anticipation of seeing some cars run over 400 mph along the salt surface. Unfortunately Mother Nature had different plans for Bonneville this year and they did not included any record runs on the Salt.

The SCTA set up for speed week earlier in the week and the courses had looked smooth and very hard.  The SCTA was ready to finish up the course set up but when it rained Wednesday evening they were forced to delay the opening of tech inspection and the final course set up, for 24 hours. The rain that fell was not a real concern at that point and everyone was optimistic and hoping the weather mans forecast for the next few days were wrong.

By Friday the hotels and campgrounds were filling up with racers and spectators, everyone keeping one eye on the sky and one ear on the radio for word from the SCTA on the questionable condition of the Salt.  Rumours were spreading quickly that speed week could be cancelled this year, something no one wanted to hear.  On Friday evening another storm squall passed over Bonneville, proceeded to open up and pour down on the Salt. In a message written by the SCTA, “When it rained Friday night we knew we might have a permanent problem and we dispatched veteran board member Roy Creel to the salt immediately”.  Early Saturday morning the SCTA race director, BNI chairman, and several veteran Bonneville racers went to review the conditions out on the courses.   Afterwards coming to agreement that the amount of water on the salt flat was insurmountable and made the difficult decision that Speed Week would be cancelled.
